Code of Ethics
I follow the General Hypnotherapy Register’s Code of Ethics in my psychotherapy and hypnotherapy practice.
My Commitment to Ethical Practice
Maria da Silva – Psychotherapist & Hypnotherapist
As a registered practitioner with the General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR), I follow a strict Code of Ethics designed to protect your wellbeing, dignity, and privacy. Here’s how I apply these principles in my work with you:
1. Professional Integrity and Competence
I only offer therapy in areas where I am fully trained, experienced, and insured. If your needs fall outside my scope, I will always refer you to a more suitable professional. I am transparent about my qualifications and memberships, and I’m happy to share these with you at any time.
2. Respect and Equality
I treat every client with equal care and respect, regardless of background, identity, or beliefs. My practice is inclusive and non-judgmental, and I strive to create a safe space for everyone.
3. Clear Communication
Before we begin therapy, I will explain:
- My fees and payment terms
- Cancellation policies
- Confidentiality boundaries
- What you can realistically expect from therapy
I never promise a cure, but I do commit to working with you toward meaningful change.
4. Client Welfare
Your wellbeing is my priority. I work to support your autonomy and emotional safety. If I believe therapy is no longer beneficial, I will discuss this with you and help you find appropriate support elsewhere.
If you’re experiencing physical symptoms, I will always recommend consulting a medical professional. I do not diagnose physical or mental conditions.
5. Confidentiality and Data Protection
Everything you share with me is kept confidential, unless there is a legal or safety reason to disclose (e.g. risk of harm to yourself or others). I follow UK GDPR guidelines to protect your personal data, and I store your records securely.
I will never record or share your sessions without your written consent. If I use anonymized case material for supervision or training, I will always respect your wishes and privacy.
6. Boundaries and Safety
I maintain clear professional boundaries at all times. I will never exploit our relationship emotionally, financially, or in any other way. If physical techniques are used (e.g. tactile induction in hypnotherapy), I will explain them and ask for your permission first.
I also ensure that my therapy space is safe, comfortable, and appropriate for our work together.
7. Transparency and Accountability
If you ever have concerns about my conduct or the therapy process, I will guide you on how to raise a complaint through the appropriate channels. I am committed to ethical transparency and continuous professional development.
